According to Hofman, ‘a green edge’ is very much what Nouryon is after, as well. “We want to improve our operational footprint and re- duce CO2 and other emissions as well as waste. In addition, we prioritise safety in all our operations,” he explains. MAXIMISE THE POTENTIAL Hofman is “extremely glad” that Nouryon has found a like-minded partner in Metsä Fibre – another strong play- er dedicated to sustainability and growth. “We have a mutual interest in creating the best possible value out of wood,” he says. In addition, Metsä Fibre and Nouryon have similar cultures and share the same view of the future, Hofman believes. “Metsä Fibre has demonstrated consistent quality and a high level of service. Also, the company’s commitment to the environment is considerable,” he says, referring to the Finnish model: “When you cut down a tree, you always plant new ones.” Looking ahead into the 2020s Hofman believes that the two companies can grow and achieve their goals together. “The role of wood will continue to grow and the seam- less collaboration that we have in Äänekoski will be very valuable,” he predicts. Sustainability will increase in importance. Hofman says that, presently, Nouryon gets almost half (44%) of its energy from renewable sources. Furthermore, carbon emissions are down 29 per cent since 2012 (1.2 million tonnes) – while production has grown. “We must take this momentum into the future and keep expanding while holding onto a sustainable mindset. Tak- ing the long-term view – together with Metsä Fibre – we will focus very strongly on quality and reliability.” • NOURYON Manufacturer of essential chemistry used in everyday products such as paper, plastics, building materials, food, pharmaceuticals, and personal care items. • Established in 2018, but with a history stretching back nearly 400 years • 10,000 employees in over 80 countries • Turnover EUR 5 billion in 2020 • Collaboration with Metsä Fibre since the late 1980’s www.nouryon.com
