In addition, the likelihood of acquisitions is further increased because the forest industry’s consolidation rate, which describes an industry concentration, is still low. Basically, then, there are plenty of opportunities on offer. The concentration of different branches of industry is generally described with a four-stage S curve, which is composed of the combined market share of an industry’s three biggest companies.

The pulp and paper industry is situated practically entirely in stage 2. In it, the market share of the three largest companies is 30 per cent, on average, and many companies are in strong pursuit of growth and expansion, also through corporate acquisitions. In the pulp industry, consolidation is further along than in the forest industry in general. Producers of short-fibre pulp include several companies that do not produce any- thing else.
