Metsä Fibre’s commitment to its 2030 sustainability targets builds a road towards a low-carbon society and supports the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Towards a low-carbon society – our 2030 sustainability goals
Everything we do involves sustainability and responsi- bility – from the forest all the way to the products. Our sustainability targets focus on the following areas: SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY We use northern wood from sustainably managed for- ests in areas where the forests grow more than they are used. Our target is to increase the amount of carbon stored in products and forests by 30 per cent from 2018 by, for example, promoting sustainable forest manage- ment. Another 2030 target is to secure the biodiversity of forest nature by increasing the amount of decaying wood in Finnish forests. FOSSIL-FREE MILLS AND RESOURCE EFFICIENT PRODUCTION One of the key sustainability targets for Metsä Fibre is fully fossil-free mills by 2030. Of our mills, the Äänekoski mill – the largest wood-processing unit in the northern hemisphere – is already fossil-free, as is our mill in Jout- seno, under normal operations. If the planned investments in Kemi and Rauma are realised, the Kemi bioproduct mill likewise Rauma saw- mill and pulp mill would be fossil-free.
The 2030 targets focus on utilising 100 per cent of the side streams and reducing process water usage by 25 per cent from 2018. The use of process water has already been reduced by 19 per cent over the past eight years and we will continue to increase the efficiency of its use by another 25 per cent by 2030. SUSTAINABLE SUPPLY CHAIN By 2030, all our suppliers will operate according to the responsibility criteria we have set for them. Up to 92 per cent of our suppliers have already accepted the criteria. ETHICS AND SAFETY A responsible corporate culture as well as zero-accident working environment are also a part of the sustainability targets. Our goal is for every Metsä Fibre employee and every partner employee to be able to head home healthy. Together with the whole Metsä Group, we are commit- ted to the UN Global Compact corporate responsibility initiative and its principles in the areas of human rights, la- bour, the environment and anti-corruption. In addition to this, our own 2030 sustainability targets support the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Below we have identified the most relevant UN SDGs for our company. •
